Director’s Corner

ASPAN news highlighting Region I* members

By Nancy O’Malley, MA RN CPAN CAPA

ASPAN Director, Region I

Congratulations to Sue McDonald, Coordinator of ASPAN’s National Conference Strategic Work Team, and all the team members for their outstanding work in planning ASPAN’s 27th National Conference. The theme, Be the Voice: Advocacy through Education, Practice, Research, and Legislative Involvement gave all of the attendees a chance to learn, participate, and have lots of fun, too. Many thanks to Sue Fossum (PANAC), now ASPAN’s Immediate Past President, for her strength of character and leadership this past year. We look forward to the coming year with Lois Schick (RMPANA) as President.

Actions taken by ASPAN’s Representative Assembly (RA):

Ÿ Election of ASPAN Officers and Directors

Vice-President/President Elect, Terry Clifford

Secretary, Jacque Crosson (AzPANA)

Director for Clinical Practice, Barbara Godden (RMPANA)

Director Region II, Twilla Shrout, (re-elected)

Director Region IV, Katrina Bickerstaff

Ÿ Passage of two position statements: one on the Geriatric Patient and another on Advocacy.

Ÿ Support of US House Resolution 2994: National Pain Care Policy Act of 2007 was defeated after debate by the RA members. It became clear that a policy regarding a process for reviewing the appropriateness of supporting congressional bills needs to be in place. This was an opportunity to see how the RA directs our course of actions.

Ÿ Changes to the 2008-2010 Standards of Perianesthesia Nursing Practice were approved; the new standards should be available by this fall.

Ÿ The RA received reports on the work of many ASPAN committees and Strategic Work Teams as well as the March 2008 Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) conference, and the progress of the ASPAN website redesign.

I wish you ALL had come to see how this works, hear the reports, and to be a part of the governance of your organization -- really amazing!

On to the awards, appointments, and appreciations for Region I members: Region I had so many winners! Hard to know where to start and I know I will leave someone out, so please forgive and let me know!
